Self-Control

"Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified." - 1 Corinthians 9:24-27(NLT)

A Walk with God requires us to have control over our flesh or to will that to God. We need to be ready to face anything that may come in the way. This takes training. What kind of spiritual training should we take part in to equip ourselves for spiritual races in our lives?

1. Bury yourself in God's word
"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires." - Hebrews 4:12(NLT)

His word not only guides us but it penetrates and convicts our hearts. It keeps us strong in our walk. Reading and studying the Bible on a dailt basis keeps us focused on our goal and on Him, which is needed continually.

2. Pray constantly
"And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened." - Luke 11:9-10(NLT)

God loves listening to us...He revels in our time with Him. Being in prayer could be one of the most intimate times we get to spend with God. We should come to Him in prayer all the time. Just like with any other relationship we should be in constant conversation with Him.

3. Through praise and worship
"Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!" - Psalm 150:6 (NLT)

Some of my favorite times with God are in worship. It is just you and God and you are able to give Him the praise and worship He deserves.

"He forgives all my sins and heals all my desires. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!" - Psalm 103:3-5 (NLT)

He has done so many things and by living a life of worship we give Him all the glory for our success and show hope in low times.

When we surround ourselves with His word, stay in constant communication with God, and are always lifting up His name He will make us ready for whatever life throws our way.
